Wayne Phaneuf, historian and executive editor of The Republican, will discuss the 187-year history of Springfield’s daily paper during a walking tour on Saturday, August 13, from 10:30 am to noon.
The Springfield Museums at the Quadrangle and the Springfield City Library will host "LittleFest," an event to promote a love of reading in young children, on Thursday, August 11, from 10 am to 4 pm. Activities planned for outdoors will be held inside if it rains.
The Springfield Museums’ Summer Celebration series continues August 8-12 with live performances presented at 1 pm on Toe-Tapping Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, and Fun Friday, plus the LittleFest celebration of children’s literature on Thursday.
Bring a picnic supper, a blanket or a lawn chair and join the Springfield Museums and the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association for “Wednesdays in the Park,” a series of three free live music concerts by local musicians. The concerts will be held on three Wednesdays in August from 6 to 8 pm on the Quadrangle green. If it rains, the performances will be held in the auditorium of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
There will be no charge to visit the Springfield Museums on Friday, August 5. The free admission is made possible by a grant from the Highland Street Foundation in Newton, Mass.
Photographer Jessie Carleton creates and photographs still life compositions inspired by traditional Dutch vanitas (vanity) paintings that were designed as reminders of the transient nature of life and the certainty of death. The photos are now on view at the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts through October 9 in the special exhibition Tabletops: Photographs by Jessie Carleton.
Li Zou, an award-winning artist who specializes in the “meticulous style” of traditional Chinese painting, will present an exhibition and lecture/demonstration at the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.

The Springfield Museums at the Quadrangle are recruiting volunteer docents to conduct tours and programs for children and adults in the new Wood Museum of Springfield History and in the Springfield Science Museum.
