Wandering Folk Artists: Family Portraits in the Early 19th Century
In the digital age it is hard to believe that at one time images of family members were hard to obtain, expensive, and relatively rare. Before the advent of photography around 1850, the only way to capture a likeness was to hire an artist to paint a portrait. A selection of these paintings by artists James Sanford Ellsworth and Joseph Whiting Stock are on view at the Wood Museum of Springfield History through May 6 in the exhibition Wandering Folk Artists: Family Portraits in the Early 19th Century.
Exhibit Presents “The Real Housewives of Currier & Ives”
Hand-colored Currier & Ives lithographs that illustrate the changing role of women in the 19th century are on view through June 25 at the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts in the exhibition The Real Housewives of Currier & Ives.
Spend February Vacation with Creepy Crawly Critters
The Springfield Museums have planned a week of family fun during February school vacation. “Creepy Crawly Critters” activities will be offered Monday, Feb. 20 through Friday, Feb. 24, from 10 am-5 pm and are free with museum admission unless noted.
Nominees Being Sought for 2012 Ahadi and Ubora Awards
The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums is seeking nominations for the 3nd annual Ahadi Youth Award and 21st annual Ubora Award. Nominations for both awards must be received by March 31, 2012.
Indulge Yourself at Culture & Cocktails
The Springfield Museums’ Culture & Cocktails series will continue with “Indulgence: An Evening of Wine & Chocolate” on Thursday, February 2, from 5 to 8 pm in the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
Stars Over Springfield at the Science Museum
The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky-gazing on Friday, February 3, at 7:30 pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the Orion Nebula. The program will be held rain or shine. If it is cloudy, a planetarium show will be presented in place of telescope viewing.

The Springfield Museums will present the following Museums à la Carte programs in February. The programs are held on Thursdays at 12:15 pm in the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts.
Museum School Art Faculty to Exhibit Work
Art work by 14 professional artists from the area who teach at the Museum School will be on view from January 17 to April 8 at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts in the special exhibition Teaching Artists.
